When choosing a gift for a newborn, you don’t have to pick the cutest item on the shelf. The best gifts make everyday life a little easier for parents or come in handy as the baby grows. Before buying something larger, it’s worth asking what the family already has. That way, you can avoid duplicates and choose something they’ll genuinely need.

10 practical gift ideas for a newborn and their family

  1. A ready-made gift set. A lovely choice when you want a gift that’s ready to give, with items that work well together. Check what’s actually inside and the recommended ages, not just how pretty the box looks.

  2. Muslin cloths and small washcloths. They’re useful during feeds, for cleaning your baby, and for all the little messes that happen throughout the day. Having several means there’s usually a clean one to hand while the others are in the wash.

  3. Nappies in the right size. Perhaps one of the most practical gifts of all. Ask the parents which size and brand they prefer. Avoid buying a huge supply in the smallest size, as babies grow quickly.

  4. Clothes in the next size up. Families often receive plenty of newborn-size clothes, while outfits in sizes 3–6 or 6–9 months can be saved for later. Think about the season the baby will be in when they reach that size, and choose comfortable pieces that are easy to care for.

  5. A baby sleeping bag. If the parents would like one, choose a sleeping bag suited to the baby’s age and size, and ask what weight or warmth level they need. Loose blankets and pillows are not a substitute for a safe sleep space.

  6. Bath-time essentials. A soft hooded towel, washcloths, or other bath items the parents have asked for will be used again and again. Before buying skincare products, check whether the family has particular preferences or the baby has sensitive skin.

  7. Age-appropriate toys or books. Babies can enjoy looking at high-contrast pictures and simple cloth or board books with a parent from an early age. Toys designed for grasping become more relevant later. Always check the age recommendation and avoid toys with small detachable parts.

  8. A gift card for a children’s store. Letting parents choose for themselves means they can buy the right size or an essential they’re still missing. Well-known children’s stores in Estonia include JUKU, BabyCity and Laste Maailm; a Beebi Cuddles e-gift card is another option. Before buying, check whether your chosen store offers gift cards, how long they’re valid and where they can be used. Most importantly, choose a store the family would actually like to shop at.

  9. A little help for the parents. A food-delivery gift card, a homemade meal or an offer to pick up groceries can be worth more than another toy in those first weeks. Ask what would genuinely help, and respect the family’s wishes about visitors.

  10. A contribution towards a bigger purchase. If the family needs a car seat, pushchair or another expensive item, pooling money with friends can be more useful than choosing something on your own. Let the parents select the model that suits their needs.

Saga Copenhagen gift sets at Beebi Cuddles

Beebi Cuddles is a children’s store that stocks ready-made gift sets from the Danish brand Saga Copenhagen. Each set brings together thoughtfully chosen items that can be useful at different stages of a baby’s first year, not just on the day the gift is opened.

For example, the Neutral set includes a knitted bib, booties, a cloth nappy and a washcloth. Some items can be used in the early days, while the booties will come in handy as the baby grows. The Butterfly set contains a sensory toy, a pacifier clip and a cloth nappy; the Blue Dream set includes a cloth nappy, a comforter and a wooden teething ring. If you’d like to give clothes for later, the Nude and Ivory sets contain pieces in size 6–9 months.

That makes each box a thoughtful selection rather than a collection of decorative items. It doesn’t mean every item is suitable for use from birth: follow the product’s age guidance and instructions for toys and clothing. Comforters and other loose soft items should not be left in a newborn’s sleep space. And if you already know what the family needs, their wishes are always the best place to start.
